Amusing original sketch by Theodore Roosevelt of a rather funny-looking bear in profile, accomplished in pencil on the reverse of an off-white 5 x 3.25 sheet from a business in Rock Springs, Wyoming, with Roosevelt adding above and below: “Philopoena! John’s conception of a bear. He has confused it with the common or garden skunk.” Includes a mailing envelope from the “Supreme Court, Judges Chamber, Court House Chambers St., New York,” with a handwritten provenance note by the referenced “John,” who writes: “Roosevelt campaign for V. Pres, especially his drawing of my conception of a bear.” In very good condition, with creasing, soiling, intersecting folds, and a short split to the top of the vertical fold.
