Partly-printed DS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 8 x 10, July 16, 1880. President Hayes directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to a warrant for the pardon of Thomas O. Smith, alias Henry St. Clair.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Rutherford B. Hayes. In fine condition.
Although unsubstantiated, per the 1881 Documents of the Assembly of the State of New York, Thomas Smith was sentenced to 10 years in prison for burglary in the second degree. His sentence was commuted to two years and six months and was said to have been terminated on June 14, 1880.
