Pasetti of St. Petersburg, boldly signed and inscribed across the top in dark ink, and dated December 18, 1890—the day after the premiere of his opera The Queen of Spades. Of the tremendously successful debut performance, Tchaikovsky observed: '[Lead tenor Nikolay] Figner and the Saint Petersburg orchestra… have made true miracles.'
