Exceedingly rare autograph of the celebrated medieval poet, Charles, Duke of Orléans

Accomplished medieval poet (1394-1465) who was Duke of Orléans from 1407 until his death, following the murder of his father, Louis I, Duke of Orléans. Most of his poetic output came during his 25 years as a prisoner of war in England, after which he returned to France and became a celebrated patron of the arts. His works have inspired many modern artists and musicians, including Henri Matisse, Edward Elgar, and Claude Debussy. Exceedingly rare vellum manuscript DS in French, signed “Charles,” one page, 13.25 x 4, May 28, 1442. An order given to his treasurer to pay a sum of one hundred gold crowns to Sieur de Flaurigny for a two-month trip he made to Blois to see the king, boldly signed at the conclusion by Charles d'Orleans. In fine condition.
