French-American linguist, philosopher, and jurist (1760-1844) who emigrated to America to serve in the Revolutionary War, later making major contributions to the study of Native American languages and the understanding of written Chinese. ALS signed “Peter S. Du Ponceau,” one page, 7.25 x 9.5, November 1, 1831. Handwritten letter to Professor Ducatel at the University of Maryland, in part: "I have rec'd your favor…with the proof of an article from a London magazine. I think you will do well to print it. I would only head it thus: From the London Mechanics' Magazine, for Aug't-Sep…D'Homeyne is very angry with Raft & would have liked to publish his correspondence…L. F. should know somehow or other that he commits his friend too much, & may embarrass him still more than he has done. I hope he will be silent for some time at best—if not, he may wait." Docketed on verso by J.H. Cauten Jr., noting the letter was “Given to me by Professor Ducatel in 1836.” In fine condition.
