Description

Rare 1669 receipt signed by France's leading Enlightenment tragedian

French dramatist (1639-1699) best known as a tragedian, producing such examples of neoclassical perfection as Phèdre, Andromaque, and Athalie. Considered to be one of the three great playwrights of 17th-century France, along with Molière and Corneille, Racine endures as an important literary figure in the Western tradition. Exceedingly rare partly-printed vellum DS in French, signed “Racine,” one page, 6.75 x 4.5, December 11, 1669. Untranslated noble annuity receipt, signed in the lower left by Racine. In fine condition, with light soiling, and slight fading to Racine's signature. Accompanied by two engraved portraits of Racine.
