Description

Einstein writes to a fellow physicist: "Efforts to get you an astronomical job in America have not been successful"

TLS in German, signed “A. Einstein,” one page, 8.25 x 10.75, April 13, 1934. Letter to Cambridge astronomer Arthur Beer, in full (translated): "I found out from Colleague Russell recently, to my regret, that his efforts to get you an astronomical job in America have not been successful so far. I beg you to keep me informed of your efforts. I am willing to write anywhere if you see fit to suggest it to me." He adds a brief handwritten postscript: "I'm staying for the summer in America." In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, two file holes, and light show-through from old mounting remnants on the back. Einstein's autograph postscript is noteworthy, as it reveals his undecided future—it would not be until 1935 that he decided to remain permanently in the United States and apply for citizenship.
