Description

Scarce, lengthy passage from Ravel's famous String Quartet in F major

Magnificent AMQS on an off-white 10.5 x 6.5 album page, prominently signed and inscribed below in bold ink, "Mlle. Leonline Champion, Maurice Ravel, 16/5 13." Ravel pens a long quote from the first movement of his String Quartet in F major, comprising four bars in a four-staff system. In fine condition, with some light edge toning.

Maurice Ravel completed his String Quartet in F major in early April 1903 at the age of 28, and it premiered in Paris a year later. The work follows a four-movement classical structure and is modeled on that of Claude Debussy's String Quartet: the opening movement, in sonata form, presents two themes that occur again later in the work; a playful scherzo second movement is followed by a lyrical slow movement. The finale reintroduces themes from the earlier movements and ends the work vigorously.
