Description

ANS signed “Jackie,” one page, 7.5 x 2, no date. A handwritten note addressed to “Eliza Lloyd, 27 Place Dauphine, Paris,” which reads: “Bunny said yes — Will telephone soon, love Jackie.” Cloth-matted with a photo and three engraved plaques to an overall size of 30.5 x 17.75; the largest plaque, which contains background information related to both Kennedy and the recipient, reads, in part: “Jacqueline Kennedy was contacting the daughter of one of her closest friends when she sent this brief note to Eliza Lloyd in Paris. Lloyd was the daughter of Rachel Lambert Lloyd ‘Bunny’ Mellon, who was the wife of Paul Mellon, one of the wealthiest men in America. The friendship blossomed during Mrs. Kennedy's earliest days in Washington as the wife of Senator John F. Kennedy. After his election to the presidency, Mrs. Mellon became an indispensable help in Jacqueline Kennedy's attempts to make the White House an appropriately beautiful national treasure. A trained horticulturist, Mrs. Mellon restored a deteriorated Rose Garden and designed the exquisite garden on the east side of the White House that became known as the Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Garden. Within the walls of the Executive Mansion, Mrs. Mellon's influence in the world of art helped the First Lady's drive to acquire treasured paintings. Her late father-in-law, industrialist and former Secretary of the Treasury, Andrew Mellon, had founded the National Gallery of Art and his son Paul became its president. Through her family connections, Bunny Mellon would help acquire a priceless painting of Thomas Jefferson by Rembrandt Peale and a portrait of Andrew Jackson by John Wesley Jarvis. The two women's friendship would continue for many years, and Mrs. Mellon helped Jacqueline furnish the home she built in Martha's Vineyard after the death of her second husband, Aristotle Onassis.” In very good to fine condition, with light creasing, and a light paperclip impression to the top edge.
