American lawyer, congressman, and Governor of Massachusetts (1834-1896) who after leaving office, defended his most famous legal client, Lizzie Borden, who was notoriously accused of killing her father and stepmother; she was acquitted in a highly sensationalized trial. LS as governor, signed “Geo. D. Robinson, Governor,” two pages, 8 x 10, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Department letterhead, July 16, 1885. Letter to E. W. Perry of the National Cattle Growers’ Association, relating to the organization’s request for the appointment “of delegates to represent Massachusetts at your annual convention, November 17th and 18th. I have to say that after consultation with the secretary of the State Board of Agriculture, it does not appear to be feasible to take such action as you desire. The Legislature has made no provision for the compensation and expenses of such delegates, and there seems to be no gentlemen, interested in the matter, who desire the appointment under the circumstances.” In very good to fine condition, with file holes, handling wear, and intersecting folds.
