Description

Two TLSs signed "George," each one page on 6.25 x 4.5 personal stationery cards, February 17, 1979 and January 14, 1980, to noted Football Hall of Famer and broadcaster Bud Wilkinson, concerning Bush’s 1980 presidential run. The 1979 card reads, in part: "I know there is a long tough road ahead, but I’m convinced with hard work and friends like you supporting me, I can do it… Bar and I are both thankful.” Bush adds a handwritten postscript: “Bud - Bucky told me of your offer to help in any way. Fantastic. Bud things are really moving!!” The 1980 note reads, in part: “Just a short personal note to thank you for that maximum campaign contribution… The emphasis is on the ‘early’ states. I am convinced we will win.” Also includes a February 21, [1980] Wine Buffet Supper invitation hosted by Wilkinson at the George Bush for President Headquarters. In overall very fine condition.

Charles “Bud” Wilkinson (1916-94) won three college national football championships as both a player (1934-36) and as head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners (1950, 1955, and 1956). He was head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals (NFL) from 1978-79 before returning to broadcasting for ESPN.
