Scarce book of engravings by Jean Audran after works by Charles Le Brun, court painter to Louis XIV: Expressions des Passions de l'Âme [Expressions of the Passions of the Soul]. Paris: Jean Audran, 1727. Hardcover rebound in marbled boards, 11.5 x 15.5, containing a prefatory text/table of contents, title page, and nineteen plates portraying faces with different expressions—for example, "l'Admiration," "Veneration," "la Ravissement," "la Joye tranquille," "la Tristesse," "l'Effroy," and "le Desespoir." These images offer a curious physiognomic study of the character of man. Each plate is trimmed and affixed to a larger page, and the front board bears a handwritten title. In very good condition, with some small touchups and repairs to the engravings, and heavy scuffing to the boards.
