Civil War-dated ALS in pencil, signed “G. T. B.,” one page, 7.75 x 6.75, November 30, 1862. Handwritten letter to Major F. L. Childs, who was recently arrested and requests Beauregard to review his case, in full: “Your letter of the 27th inst. Enclosing letters etc.—to the Chief of your Dept., relating to your arrest, have been examined by me, endorsed & forwarded this day with my report of the same occurrence to the War Dept. Enclosed you will find a copy of Brig. Gen’l R. S. Ripley’s charges against you—a copy of mine will be sent you as soon as they shall have been drawn up by my Chief of Staff who is at present too unwell to do so.” In fine condition.
In early November Beauregard and Roswell S. Ripley began to have difficulties with Major F. L. Childs of the Charleston Arsenal. General Beauregard had decided he must quickly ‘rifle and band’ as many heavy artillery pieces as possible to defend the harbor. Citing the unacceptably slow work and, in some cases, utter refusal of Childs, Beauregard placed the project under Ripley's control and Childs was later arrested for not complying with Ripley's orders. Beauregard and Ripley were in agreement regarding this matter and worked well together with no evidence of discord.
