Two Farmers & Merchants National Bank checks, both 6.25 x 2.75, filled out in another hand signed by Richard E. Byrd, “R. E. Byrd,” made payable to arctic explorer Fitzhugh Green, Sr. for $400 on November 5, 1927, and to Ashley Chadbourne McKinley, an aerial photographer who joined Byrd on his expedition to the South Pole, for $100 on July 31, 1933; the reverse of both are endorsed by the check’s respective recipient. Includes a commemorative cover with a cachet honoring the “Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition, Little America, 1933-1934,” postmarked at the Little American exploration base on January 31, 1934, with a caption above reading: “This letter has been delayed for one year because of difficulties in transportation at Little America, Antarctica.” In overall fine condition. Accompanied by a woven ribbon honoring Byrd as the “First to Fly Over the North Pole, 1926.”
