Civil War-dated ALS as an Indiana Congressman, one page, 5.25 x 8.25, May 13, 1862. Handwritten letter sent to President Abraham Lincoln, in full: “I cannot, as I have been asked to do, recommend anyone for appointment as Provisional Governor of Florida; knowing too little of the wishes of the loyal men in that State as to who should fill that grave + responsible trust. But I yield to a request made of me, barely to say that, though but slightly acquainted with O. M. Downer, Esq., who for many years resided at Jacksonville, Fla., he has been introduced to me by a valued relative as a gentleman of talents, of personal worth + of energy. His loyalty, I would add, is undoubted.” In fine condition.
