Description

"A warning to the World that wars must cease," writes Haworth on the atomic bomb, "Of course some people would rather be dead than sensible"

British chemist (1883-1950) who received the 1937 Nobel Prize in Chemistry ‘for his investigations on carbohydrates and vitamin C.’ The prize was shared with Swiss chemist Paul Karrer for his work on other vitamins. Rare and terrific TLS, signed "W. N. Haworth," one page, 5 x 8, personal University of Birmingham letterhead, January 14, 1946. Letter to Stephen May, in full: “At your wish I am sending you this letter with my best wishes for your future. As to the Atomic Bomb I think it is a warning to the World that wars must cease, and that the peoples of the earth should come together in a human fellowship and brotherhood and settle their differences by discussion and not by fighting. Some people will still think that it is possible to hold a gentlemanly war but no war has ever been gentlemanly. The alternative to this policy can only be extermination. Of course some people would rather be dead than sensible.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. During World War II, Haworth was a member of the MAUD Committee which oversaw research on the British atomic bomb project.
