Tattered World War II-era personal 'Good Luck' flag of a Japanese soldier, 26 x 19, featuring a bright red 'sun' in the center of the white cotton field, signed in black ink by the soldier's friends and family. It was customary for family and friends of the Japanese soldier to sign these 'Good Luck Flags' before he went off to battle. When unfurled on the ground, they would be used by Japanese soldiers as warnings to friendly aircraft not to strike. The accompanying caption placard states that this flag was removed from a soldier killed in action at Iwo Jima, and that the faded stains are blood stains. In good to very good condition, with heavy wear and soiling.
