DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, December 8, 1899. President McKinley directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to my letter of condolence addressed to His Imperial Majesty Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias.” Signed nicely at the conclusion by William McKinley. In fine condition.
It’s uncertain the exact reason for McKinley’s letter of condolence. The most notable occurrence to warrant such a letter would have been the death of the emperor’s younger brother, Grand Duke George Alexandrovich of Russia, who died suddenly at the age of 28 in July of that year.
