English Whig nobleman and colonial administrator (1784-1849) who served three times as First Lord of the Admiralty and who was Governor-General of India between 1836 and 1842, dedicating himself especially to the improvement of native schools and the expansion of the commercial industry of India. Three ALSs signed "Auckland," totaling five pages on three sheets, 4.25 x 7, November 11-14, 1847. Handwritten letters pertaining to arrangements for the shipment of plants aboard the "Blazer." One letter, in part: "I had intended to call upon you today, and to thank you for the assistance which you have given to us—I mean the Blazer to sail from Davenport on the 1st of next month…the plants will be best put on board at Portsmouth." In overall fine condition.
