ALS signed “Melvin,” one page both sides, 8 x 10.5, no date but postmarked October 23, 1943. Handwritten letter to his wife, in part: "In your letter you said I write you only every other day. That is not correct. I write you some each day. They might be short a lot of times because there is little I can say except I love you…If I wrote you every time I thought of you I would be doing nothing else. I told you about the horse (Arabian) situation. Now my information is that they will have one for me this coming Monday. It will be pure-bred and pedigreed if at all. I assume I can count on the horse but I must see it first…H. & I went out to see a villa yesterday. It did not even have a bath in it at all. A villa just means a house and nothing else. These people have never developed a high regard for the bath. It is the last thing they think of when building and most of the time they forget it entirely…This is a beautiful city but underneath it is not pretty at all. There is no place to go except a picture occasionally and I have not been to any yet. There is nothing to buy except cheap stuff, bracelets, sorry leather goods, pocket books, etc. The place appears to have been well looted. There are a few antique shops. I went into one and found nothing I would want. I understand things are different in other places, but the prices here for even cheap goods are far too high and I understand the Americans are the only ones to blame. They overpay and overtip even for shoe shines. Money seems to mean nothing to them." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Purvis's hand (incorporating his name twice), and signed with his censorship signature, "Melvin Purvis."
