French soldier, explorer, and priest (1858-1916) who lived among the Tuareg people in the Sahara in Algeria and was assassinated by rebels; he was canonized as a Catholic saint in 2022. ALS in French, signed “Fr. Charles de Jesus,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.25, August 22, 1906. Handwritten letter from Tamanrasset, Algeria, with sketches of a cross and heart at the head of each page, with "Jesus" written beside it; on the first page, he also adds the Latin word for charity, "Caritas." In part (translated): "How much I have to thank you for your letter of June fourth and for your book entitled the Life of the Teenager Jesus…Please pray so as I can become what you believe I am instead of being the miserable being that I am. It is true that I have been attracted by the smell of divine perfumes and I have walked slowly and steadily after them unfortunately. Do I need to say you that it has been for me very sweet to accompany you in this shared sacred places where the sight of Jesus fell so often. As I have a passionate devotion for the Mount of Beatitudes that is today little known. France's priests know it. It is the real place and they are trying to buy it and when I receive the news I will write you. It will be a great joy to see a place so sacred coming back after many centuries in possession of the church. May Jesus establish there its cult, its prayer, its presence in the same tabernacle.
I thank you with you for your intention to join me. I should give you some details about the ways you could reach me. If the will of the beloved manifested to you in a few months you might profit from the voyage that I will have to do to Benabbas…The reign of the heart of Jesus be over you that his name be sanctified that his will be forever on earth like in heaven. Thank you from all my heart for the goodness of your affection." In fine condition.
