British arctic explorer and scientist (1789-1857) who produced a pioneering survey of the eastern coast of Greenland and produced a number of important papers on the nature of terrestrial magnetism. ALS signed “W. Scoresby,” one page, 4.5 x 7.25, April 26, 1847. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, in part: "I beg to thank you and the Lodge, with which, more particularly, I have the pleasure of being associated, for the kind expressions of sympathy & congratulation in your letter of the 25th. Expecting, on to be in Bradford in the course of the week, I shall not (having not five minutes before leaving Whitby for the country) enter into the subject matter of your communication." In fine condition, with some light show-through from old mounting residue on the back.
