Scarce original program for the “Inauguration Ball” of President James A. Garfield and Vice President Chester A. Arthur held at the new United States National Museum on March 4, 1881. The 12-page booklet, 4.5 x 6, lists members of the various committees serving the inauguration, such as executive, hall and promenade reception, comfort, carriages, refreshments, music, programme, and floor. The music program lists the order of the dances with songs by “Sullivan,” “Strauss,” and “Braham,” amongst others, and notes John Philip Sousa as the conductor.
