Description

Prominent American politician (1782-1850) who served as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. He later wielded great power and influence in the Senate as a champion of Southern causes, including slavery. ALS signed "J. C. Calhoun," one page both sides, 7.5 x 9.5, October 30, 1827. Handwritten letter to Secretary of the Navy Samuel L. Southard, in full: "Dr. Stark of Norfolk, in favour of whose son, I some time since made application, informs me that there is now a vacancy in the Marine Corps, and request that I would again recall his application to your recollection. I can only add that if you deem his qualifications sufficient and circumstances will permit his appointment, I will be much gratified." In fine condition.
