ALS signed "M. Van Buren," one page, 7.5 x 9.75, July 8, 1831. Handwritten letter to writes to Secretary of the Navy Levi Woodbury, in part: "I have not the pleasure of a personal acquaintance with Mr. Quane but from the character of Mr. McFarland have no doubt of his respectability & will be happy to hear that it is in your power consistently with the claims of others to quality him." In fine condition.
At the time of writing, Woodbury (1789-1751) had recently assumed office as Secretary of the Navy in the Jackson administration. He would later serve as Secretary of the Treasury, and, from 1854 until his death, as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
