American soldier (1839-1925) who is the only man to serve as an officer in the Civil War, Indian Wars, and Spanish-American War, celebrated as the captor of Geronimo. ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.75 x 7.75, September 10, 1921. Handwritten letter to "Mr. Long," in part: "We have had some trouble with our magazine and it has not been published for several months. We hope to start it again soon. As you must have a mass of good material at your home and in your brain, I wish you would send me some material that could be used in our journal. Please select that that is broad, comprehensive & statesmanlike. Material that will build up rather than tear down-the effect is better! Something that will awaken a deeper and stronger interest in the history, welfare, and pertetuity [sic] of our glorious country, and its institutions. The advantages and blessings of our great Republic. Thoughts that will inspire a deeper, stronger, and purer patriotism in the hearts of our peopleā¦. Take good care of yourself, for good men are getting scarce." After signing, Miles adds a brief postscript regarding an earlier article, signing with his initials "N.A.M." In fine condition.
