ALS signed "W. T. Sherman," one page, 5 x 8, Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, March 11, 1881. Handwritten letter to a general, in part: "Thanks for the Map—I wanted it to illustrate a letter I had prepared for the new Secretary of War [Robert Todd Lincoln]. I will advise him to have it properly backed & mounted…. I already have one hung up in my private office." In very good to fine condition, with irregular light toning. An interesting association, as Sherman had served in the Union Army under Abraham Lincoln; the late president's son, Robert Todd Lincoln, was appointed by President Garfield as secretary of war, beginning his term on March 5, 1881.
