Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 11 x 8, September 2, 1844. President Tyler appoints Edward C. Grafton as a "Midshipman in the Navy of the United States." Signed boldly at the conclusion by John Tyler as president and countersigned by John Mason as secretary of the Navy. In fine condition. Grafton was later commissioned lieutenant, lieutenant commander, and commander. On being commissioned lieutenant commander he was placed in command of the steam gunboat ‘Genesee’ and participated in the bombardment of Fort Morgan in Mobile Bay. In 1866 he was in command of the USS Gettysburg of the North Atlantic Squadron.
