Earlier that month, on September 8th, President Dwight D. Eisenhower visited Huntsville to formally dedicate NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. The center was named in honor of Gen. George C. Marshall, Eisenhower's wartime colleague and the founder of the famous Marshall Plan for European recovery after World War II.
