Prolific Western artist (1861-1909) chiefly known for his portrayals of the Old West, where he traveled extensively. His works, which usually depicted cowboys, Native American Indians, and horses, are notable for their authenticity of detail. ALS signed “Frederic R.,” one page, 7 x 8.75, no date. Handwritten letter outlining an upcoming trip to Florida, featuring a great sketch at the top: Remington draws an artist (himself) at an easel painting a large alligator with its mouth open; a palm tree is in the background. In full: "That's better than I expected—I have had the grip and been d— sick—I have got catarrel to beat hell—I am going to die or take the old lady and pull for the palmetos—which I do on Florida Special tomorrow—how long? The length is decided by how my money holds out—that's the motive—Three weeks if I like it—a year if you will come and bring Madam. Going to take a shot-gun and I am going in for sport. No d— high diddle diddle in a big cave full of niggers and dudes.—Clear shooting and I want to feel a big tarpon pull. Going Jacksonville—Tampa—& think far south—Will write you—but its too good to think you will come—If you did—me boy we would have some fun—Got sketching kit, want to shoot alligator.—want to draw nigger—want rest and good old fashioned loaf." In very good to fine condition, with irregular light toning, a stain to the lower left corner tip, and a small chip to the right edge.
