Description

German mathematician and physicist (1882-1970) who won the 1954 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in quantum mechanics. TLS signed “M. Born,” one page, 7.5 x 11, October 25, 1966. Letter to noted physical chemist Kasimir Fajans, in part: "I regret very much that I am now too old and too ill to remember the scientific points you mention; e.g. I can't remember that you have given a contribution to what is now called Born-Haber-cycle and I am afraid I cannot help you clearing up that question." Born makes a handwritten correction to the text. In fine condition.

Accompanied by a carbon copy of Fajans' letter to Born, asking for clarification regarding the omission of his name as a contributor to the development of the Born-Haber cycle. The Born-Haber cycle is an approach to analyze reaction energies. It was named after German scientists Max Born and Fritz Haber, who developed it in 1919; it was also independently formulated by Kasimir Fajans and published concurrently in the same issue of the same journal.
