Description

Prince's handwritten wardrobe notes for a 1990 Berlin show—"Anything Black"

Handwritten notes in pencil related to wardrobe for a concert at the Waldbühne amphitheater in Berlin, Germany, on June 12, 1990, as part of the three-month long Nude Tour, written by Prince on a lightly lined 8 x 10.5 sheet of notebook paper. Written for his costume designer Helen Hiatt, the notes detail the specific color patterns and style Prince wanted for himself and his band and Game Boyz dancers. In full: “Game Boyz, 1. Blue & white, 2. Black & White, 3. Partyman suits, 4. Gold Pajamas. Prince, 1. Black joboxer & Black shirt with heart cutout, 2. Black joboxer & Black & white shirt, 3. Orange Suit, 4. White P. J.’s Green circle, Band, 1. Anything Black (Mico hopefully in see-thru), 2.” Black and blue ink notations in an unknown hand. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds and moderate creasing to bottom edge. The Nude Tour was a greatest-hits concert tour that ran from June to September 1990, and played shows in Japan and Europe exclusively. From the collection of costume designer Helen Hiatt and accompanied by a letter of provenance.

Costume designer Helen Hiatt worked for Prince from 1985-1991, directing the design and management of wardrobe for personnel, music videos, and photo shoots, and dressed Prince for all of his tours during that period. She got her start while working in the wardrobe department for 1984's Purple Rain, advancing into a higher role when Prince decided to set up a proper costume shop in 1985. Hiatt was part of or in charge of everything having to do with Prince's wardrobe from 1985-1991, and found the work both exciting and challenging. During this tenure with Prince, Hiatt obtained a variety of wardrobe elements, handwritten notes, and awards.
