French lawyer, man of letters, and political philosopher who lived during the Age of Enlightenment (1689-1755), best known for his theory of the separation of powers—today a founding principle of many liberal constitutions throughout the world. Wonderfully rare LS in French, one page both sides, 4.75 x 7.5, January 6, 1752. A letter from Montesquieu addressed from Bordeaux and sent to the noted writer, critic, and churchman William Warburton, thanking him for sending his full edition of the writings of Alexander Pope, which Warburton had published the year prior. In full (translated): “Nothing can be more glorious to me, sir, than to receive this very moment this mark of the goodness and generosity of such a great man. I have learned by Mr. Domville that you have made me the favor of sending the works of Mr. Pope edited by you and enriched with your comments. They are like the engravings on Hercules shield. I would like to express, sir, my deepest gratitude which is proportionate to the great qualities of the person I owe such a magnificent present which means that both are infinite. I have the honor to be, sir, your most humble and obliged servant.” Reverse of second integral page bears the original red wax seal. In fine condition, with faint toning and soiling, and professionally repaired seal-related paper loss to the integral address leaf. A beautiful exchange between two intellectuals of France and England, with Montesquieu, who remains quite rare, expressing his admiration for both Pope and Warburton in this exceptional letter.
