In 1601, he led an abortive coup d'état against the government of Elizabeth I and was executed for treason. Scarce LS signed “Essex,” one page, 6.25 x 4.75, June 25, 1594. Letter to Richard Bagotte, bestowing "a bucke upon Mr. Bowier her majesties gentleman usher, in some place of that countrye." Attractively double-matted and framed with an engraved portrait to an overall size of 14.5 x 22.25, with a window in the backing for viewing the address panel. In fine condition.
