Description

German shoemaker, criminal, and impostor (1849-1922) who, in 1906, masqueraded as a Prussian military officer, rounded up a number of soldiers under his 'command,' and 'confiscated' more than 4,000 marks from a municipal treasury. Although he served two years in prison, he became a folk hero as 'the Captain of Köpenick' and was pardoned by Kaiser Wilhelm II. He capitalized on his fame by publishing a memoir, and his exploits were soon adapted into a stage play and several films. Extremely scarce 3.25 x 5.5 postcard photo of Wilhelm Voigt as 'the Captain of Köpenick,' signed and inscribed vertically in fountain pen. In fine condition.
