Mining engineer (1830-1898) who formed the Sutro Tunnel Company which constructed a tunnel to provide ventilation, drainage, and an easy means of transporting men and materials to and from the mines in the region of the Comstock Lode. Retiring to San Francisco in 1879, he became active in civic and business affairs, and was elected mayor in 1894. Nevada Bank of San Francisco check, 8.25 x 3.25, filled out in another hand and signed by Sutro, "Adolph Sutro," payable to P. W. Triat for $85, July 31, 1897. Mounted, matted, and framed with an image to an overall size of 13.75 x 13.75. In fine condition.
