Boxer known as the 'Boston Strong Boy' (1858-1918) recognized as the last heavyweight champion of bare-knuckle boxing under the London Prize Ring Rules. ALS signed “John L. Sullivan,” one page, 5.5 x 8.75, Domino Hotel letterhead, January 27, 1901. Letter to a lady, in part: "I had only one engagement while on the other side that was in Chantilly France that was with Mitchell March 8th 1888. This little note will settle all arguments to contrary." In fine condition. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.
Fighting in an illegal bout on the grounds of a chateau in Chantilly, France, Sullivan squared off against English heavyweight Charley Mitchell amidst a torrential rain storm. After three hours and 39 rounds, both men were beaten and bloodied beyond recognition, and they agreed to call it a draw. The local gendarmerie arrested Mitchell for his participation in the bareknuckle match, but Sullivan was secreted away across the English Channel to Liverpool, where he spent several weeks recovering.
