ALS signed “Clyde W. Tombaugh,” one page, 8.5 x 11, New Mexico State University letterhead, January 19, 1989. Handwritten letter describing black holes, in part: "'Black Holes' consist of extremely dense states of matter. Our knowledge of them is sketchy, but astronomers think that they play an important role in the universe. Since they are 'black holes' and, therefore invisible, they can only be discovered indirectly by their effects on visible stars near them. It has been proposed that 'Black Holes' are places where matter is being squeezed or crushed out of existence—thereby contradicting one of the fundamental laws of physics. They are a real mystery." In fine condition.
