Description

Recalling his days as Secretary of State, Adams responds to a "claim of a citizen of Rhode-Island, against the Mexican Government"

ALS signed “J. Q. Adams,” one page, 8 x 9.75, January 30, 1830. Handwritten letter to Rhode Island Congressman Tristam Burges, in part: "I have an indistinct recollection that while I was Secretary of State there was a claim of a citizen of Rhode-Island, against the Mexican Government on account of a ship and cargo, but neither the name of the owner, nor of the vessel, is within my memory, nor what was done with the claim. The Register of Letters received at the Department of State will doubtless show if there was any written application to the Department, and if there was, what disposition was made of it. Before Mr. Poinsett's mission to Mexico, our diplomatic concerns there had been I think chiefly managed by Mr. Wilcocks the consul." In fine condition, with light toning from prior display.
