As Engineer-in-Chief of the New York Militia in 1861, Chester Arthur recommends "an old college acquaintance" for a Civil War combat commission

Civil War-dated ALS signed “C. A. Arthur, Eng-in-Chief,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, State of New York Quartermaster General's Department letterhead, August 17, 1861. Handwritten letter to Governor Edwin D. Morgan, in part: "This will introduce you to his excellency, Mr. George K. Dauchy of Troy, an old college acquaintance of mine. He desires a commission in the line of some Regiment in the field. He has already seen service in this campaign, having commanded a company in the 2nd Kentucky Regt., which served for three months in the Division of Genl. McClellan. I believe Mr. Dauchy to be well qualified for a commission in the line & he will present himself for any examination that may be required." In fine condition. Scarce and early wartime content from the hand of a future president.
