Description

"He is getting on very nicely with his artificial legs"—Halifax comments on his war-wounded son

Senior British Conservative politician of the 1930s (1881-1959) who held several senior ministerial posts during this time, most notably those of Viceroy of India from 1925 to 1931 and of Foreign Secretary between 1938 and 1940; on Neville Chamberlain's resignation early in May 1940, Halifax effectively declined the position of Prime Minister as he felt that Churchill would be a more suitable war leader. TLS signed “Halifax,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, British Embassy letterhead, September 12, 1944. Letter to Theodore Stillwell, referring to his son, Richard Wood, who lost both of his legs in North Africa during World War II. In part: "My son Richard has been in England for more than a year, but I am hoping he may return here quite soon. He is getting on very nicely with his artificial legs and is able to go about pretty freely on them. I will show him your letter when he arrives." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
