Description

Rare original supplement to the March 29, 1896 issue of the Greek broadsheet newspaper Estia, one page, 5.5 x 8.5, which contains an article about Spyros Louis winning the first men's marathon and becoming a national hero. The sheet was published on April 10th (March 29th by the Julian calendar) and features the following header text (loosely translated): “The Marathon Road / The result—The winner—Those with him—those arrived. What time is it? The enthusiasm of the crowd / National Victory.” The article, in part: “The national patriotism, which had grown so high, was triumphantly satisfied by the marathon victory, and the winner became truly worthy of pan-Helenic honor. Among the 18 marathon runners, including 12 Greeks and 6 foreigners, he was the first to arrive at the Stadium at 5 past 10 p.m....runner S. Louis from Marousi.” In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, edgewear, and light staining. This rare surviving document is in quite spectacular shape given its 127-year-old age.
