Description

Naval officer (1839-1911) who commanded the destruction of the Spanish fleet at Santiago de Cuba and who led the expedition to rescue Adolphus Greeley in the arctic. LS signed “W. S. Schley,” one page, 7.75 x 10, Navy Department, Bureau of Equipment and Recruiting letterhead, November 8, 1887. Letter to Caspar F. Goodrich, commander of the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, Rhode Island, in full: “The Bureau encloses memorandum bill of A. Stewart & Son for transportation of enlisted men at the Station under your command with request that you direct a public bill to be made out on prescribed form with proper certification as to the rendering of the service etc and forward same to Bureau. The original order requiring the said service should be appended to the voucher.” In fine condition.
