Senior officer of the United States Army (1895-1961) who served as General Dwight D. Eisenhower's chief of staff at Allied Forces Headquarters during the Tunisia Campaign and the Allied invasion of Italy in 1943, during World War II. He was Eisenhower's chief of staff at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force in the campaign in Western Europe from 1944 to 1945. After the war, he served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1946 to 1948, and, in 1950, he became the Director of Central Intelligence, the head of the CIA and the other American intelligence agencies. Rare vintage glossy 9.25 x 7.25 photo of a wire service photo of Walter Bedell Smith signing the armistice between the Allied Forces and Italy on September 3, 1943, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To Louis Marx, from his friend, Walter B. Smith, Major Gen. U.S.A.” In very good to fine condition, with trimmed edges, and overall light rippling.
