Maine-born Union major general (1828-1914) who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his defense of Little Round Top at Gettysburg. Scarce memorial reception flag for the funeral of General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, who passed away on February 24, 1914. The small color 5.75 x 3.5 fabric American flag contains 48 stars and remains affixed to its original wooden stick. The flag is stamped "MOUNTFORT POST 22,” which was the G.A.R. home post of Chamberlain, commander of the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment whose gallantry at the Battle of Gettysburg awarded him the Medal of Honor. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining, and a small hole to the fabric. Accompanied by a copy of a provenance letter from Gunsight Antiques, which states that this flag was one of the flags used by G.A.R. Mountfort Post 22 members during the funeral procession of General Chamberlain on February 26, 1914; this flag and several other items were acquired from the Vincent Mountfort Post 22 Department of Maine, G.A.R.
