Description

Aldrin draws a concept sketch of “Freedom Space Station”

Original concept sketch of the “Freedom Space Station” by Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrin, accomplished in black ballpoint on an off-white 4.25 x 5.5 sheet of Albuquerque Hilton stationery, signed above, “29 Aug 88, Buzz Aldrin,” and by his third wife, “Lois D. Aldrin.” Aldrin annotates various components of the space station, including “Tetrahedron Maint. Facility,” “Elevators,” “HAB & LAB Permanently Manned,” and “ET’s H2 Farm.” The sheet, as well as Aldrin’s personal Starcraft Enterprises business card, is affixed to an 8.5 x 11 sheet of stationery for the California Bicentennial Foundation. In fine condition.

Space Station Freedom was a NASA project to construct a permanently crewed Earth-orbiting space station in the 1980s. Although approved by then-president Ronald Reagan and announced in the 1984 State of the Union address, Freedom was never constructed or completed as originally designed, and after several cutbacks, the project evolved into the International Space Station program.
