Vintage matte-finish 10 x 13 MGM studio portrait photo of Mayer seated in a pleasant up-close pose, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To Arthur Freed, with all good wishes and sincerest regards, Louis B. Mayer.” Reverse bears an MGM stamp crediting the photo to Russell Ball. In fine condition, with stains and adhesive residue in the borders, easily matted out.
With musicals high on Mayer’s list of preferred genres, he asked songwriter Arthur Freed to be an associate producer for The Wizard of Oz. As Mayer had hoped, Freed's unit at MGM produced many films now considered among the very best musicals ever made: For Me and My Gal, Girl Crazy, Meet Me in St. Louis, The Harvey Girls, The Pirate, Easter Parade, The Barkleys of Broadway, On the Town, An American in Paris, Singin' in the Rain, The Band Wagon, and Gigi. Both An American in Paris and Gigi won the Academy Award for Best Picture. A wonderful association piece between two of MGM’s finest managers.
