Description

“Last Sunday was the greatest day in America’s history...Genl Lee surrendered his entire army”

Civil War-dated letter in pencil by J. B. Cunningham, unsigned, one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, April 12, 1865. Letter home following the Battle of Appomattox, in part: "We have been moving and fighting every day for two weeks. I can not tell you the news it would take a volume. Last Sunday was the greatest day in America's history…Genl Lee surrendered his entire army. We whipped them and drove them out of their strong hold and pursued them 100 miles, and captured his army…We do not know the terms of the surrender yet, but we consider the war over. I have been in one of the severest fights of the war for the numbers engaged and come out safe." In very good condition, with separations to fragile intersecting folds and uniform toning. Accompanied by a later mounted albumen photo of Cunningham outside his home.
