American lawyer, economist, and politician (1801-1869) who served as Secretary of the Treasury in Polk's administration. LS as secretary of the treasury, signed “R. J. Walker,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, December 11, 1848. Addressed from the Treasury Department, a letter to Samuel P. Robinson of New York, in full: “Your letter of the 14th inst. Relative to the completion of new Cutters now under construction, also to your son’s application for an appointment in the Rev. Service has been received. I would state in reply that the vessels will probably be finished in March next. There are at present no vacancies in the Service, when one does occur your son’s application will meet with due consideration.” In very good to fine condition, with light toning and staining, and a tear to the upper left edge.
