Magnificent vintage matte-finish 9.5 x 12.25 photo of Harlow leaning back in a skintight gown, signed in fountain pen for Clark Gable with a quote from their 1932 film Red Dust, "'E's' in the port cabin,' Just Jean.” In fine condition, with light silvering along the trimmed edges. A stunning oversized image of the blonde bombshell, autographed for her iconic co-star with a desirable quote from a classic Harlow-Gable flick.
Provenance: Estate of Clark Gable's family, Lot 71, Christie's Entertainment Memorabilia sale, July 25, 2003.
Jean Harlow and Clark Gable formed one of Hollywood's most popular and enduring screen pairings during the 'Golden Age,' making six films together between 1931 and 1937. Red Dust, directed by Victor Fleming, was their second film together—and first time as co-stars. It became an early box office success for the Harlow-Gable duo, and set the groundwork for their future collaborations. Recognizing their on-screen chemistry and box office potential, MGM paired them again in 1933's Hold Your Man, which was a box office smash. Harlow and Gable would go on to star together in China Seas (1935), Wife vs. Secretary (1936), and Saratoga (1937), which was Harlow's final film—tragically, she collapsed on set and passed away from kidney failure at the age of 26. As a rare signed photograph presented by Harlow to her greatest co-star, this is a remarkable piece of Hollywood history—unsurpassable in terms of image quality and association.
